Exchanging links can be a great way to build relations withother sites and boost your ranking at the same time. You neverknow how many friends you can make and what you can learn fromthem. So let’s get started.

First, you need to create a links page. This links page needs tolook and feel the same as the rest of your site and shouldinclude instructions on how to link to your site and an exampleof the description you want. If you use buttons for links, makesure you include a text link somewhere so search engines canfind your links page easily.

Now that you have your links page ready, it’s time to startlooking for link partners. When searching for link partners,start by searching for your keywords in Google and choose 10 to20 sites that have content that is related to or can complimentyour site. Then, add a text link with a brief description ofthier site on your links page.

Now it’s time to send off an email to each site and ask if theywill exchange links with you. I have a basic form letter I usefor this (form letter at end of article). However, I addsomething personal about their site, a compliment aboutsomething I liked. This lets them know that I’m not a botsending spam, but a real person interested in exchanging linksthat has actually took the time to review their site.

If you have not heard from them in 5 to 7 days, go ahead andsend another request but not the same one, change this one. Youmight mention that you have not heard back from them and thatyou feel your visitors could benefit from their content. You mayalso want to see if they have a phone number listed and givethem a call. I know, as a seasoned webmaster, I enjoy the phonecalls I get. Don’t be afraid to make several contact attempts.Following up on your link requests is essential. However, don’tbombard their email with requests. Always send one last emailletting them know you’re removing their link and that maybe youcan exchange links another time. Always end on a positive note.The idea is to build business relationships, not upset people.

When you get a response that your request has been accepted, goand verify your link is accurate and that the description is toyour liking. Don’t be afraid to ask for an edit if you’reunhappy with the link.

Having a link on a site with a high page rank in Google isbetter than a page with no or low page rank. Although, until yougain page rank of your own, you may have to settle for linksthat have low rank. This does not mean you can’t request linksfrom high ranking sites. Just be prepared that they may notaccept you until you have high page rank. Save these contactsfor a latter campaign.

Scenario

While attending this class, you also work at DigiFast, a small company that creates and markets video games for educational and entertainment markets. DigiFast recently moved into River View Plaza, a four-story office building in Portland, Oregon.

River View Plaza includes a lobby with a security desk and several suites on all four floors. DigiFast occupies a typical suite that includes offices for managers, full-sized cubicles for employee workstations, a conference room, and restrooms. There is a break room with a refrigerator and a microwave, but, unfortunately, the break room is on the first floor, and DigiFast is on the third floor.

DigiFast is new and growing fast. The company needs more employees, but the operating budget will not allow for it presently. Meanwhile, the goal is to make the operations efficient while keeping the current employees happy. You think one way to achieve this goal is by attracting outside services to the building.

The other businesses in the building are similar in size to DigiFast but focus on markets other than software: a dentist, a young lawyer, and an insurance company. The building also has several spaces not yet rented. At capacity, the building can accommodate approximately 1,300 people.

The location of River View Plaza is ideal, and the size of the office is adequate. However, the owners of the building supply space but little else in the way of service. The entrepreneurial spirit in you views this as a golden opportunity to attract a new service for DigiFast and other companies in the building.

Your task is to convince your colleagues, manager, the owner of DigiFast, and the building management company your service has great potential and would be useful for your company’s employees and others in the building. A committee of key individuals will make the decision to move forward . . . or not. The committee consists of the following:

Charlotte Alexander, the founder and owner of DigiFast. She has a master’s degree in computer engineering and has spent 20 years working in IT industries. Charlotte is interested in efficiency and company growth.

Mark Jackson, your manager: Mark was recently recruited from a major video marketing company. He has an MBA from a prestigious university and two years’ work experience. Mark cares about the bottom line—he favors creativity as long as profit does not suffer.

Task

There is nothing quite as welcome as those beautiful springflowers that seem to emerge from nowhere to welcome the arrivalof spring. Bulb type flowers are really unique plants, becausethey spend most of their days resting quietly beneath thesurface of the soil. Then right on schedule, up they come, fullof bloom and vigor, and then almost as fast as they came, theygo. Except for the green leafy part of the plant that tends tolinger longer than we would like them to. ? Despite their shortbloom time and unattractive foliage after the blooms are gone,they are still a wonderful addition to any landscape. But howshould you care for them? First let’s talk about how to use themin your landscape. Flowers of all kinds are best when planted ingroupings. Many people buy 25 or 50 bulbs and just go around theyard planting helter skelter. That’s fine if that’s what youwant, but when planted that way they tend to blend in with thelandscape and really don’t show up well at all. When you plantthem in large groups they are a breathtaking showpiece. ? In theearly spring start thinking about where you would like to createa bed for flower bulbs. Prepare the bed by raising it with goodrich topsoil, and if at all possible add some well composted cowmanure. Do this in the spring while you are in the gardeningmood; you may not be in the fall. Over the summer fill the bedwith annual flowers to keep the weeds down, and to pretty upyour yard for the summer. Come fall all you have to do is pullout the annuals and plant your bulbs to the depth recommended onthe package. ? If you think you could have a problem withsquirrels digging up the bulbs and eating them, you can alsowrap the bulbs in steel wool, leaving just the tip of the bulbexposed so it can grow out of the little wire cage you’vecreated. Or you can just plant the bulbs and then cover the bedwith chicken wire or plastic fencing until the bulbs start togrow in the spring. ? When the bulbs come up in the spring andstart blooming, you should clip off the blooms as they start towither. This keeps the bulb from producing seeds, which requiresa lot of energy, and you want the bulb to use all of itsavailable energy to store food in preparation for the bulb’sresting period. Once the bulbs are completely done blooming youdon’t want to cut off the tops until they are withered and dieback. The million dollar question is how to treat the tops untilthat happens. ? Many people bend them over and slip a rubberband over them, or in the case of bulbs like Daffodils tie themwith one of the long leaves. This seems to work because it is avery common practice among many experienced gardeners. However,Mike is about to rain on the parade. ? I strongly disagree withthis theory because back about 6th grade we learned aboutphotosynthesis in science class. To recap what we learned, andwithout going into the boring details, photosynthesis is theprocess of the plant using the sun’s rays to make food foritself. The rays from the sun are absorbed by the foliage andthe food making process begins. In the case of a flower bulbthis food is transported to the bulb beneath the ground andstored for later use. ? So basically the leaves of the plant arelike little solar panels. Their job is to absorb the rays fromthe sun to begin the process known as photosynthesis. If we foldthem over and handcuff them with their hands behind their back,they are not going to be able to do their job. It’s likethrowing a tarpaulin over 80% of a solar panel. ? In order forthe leaves to absorb the rays from the sun, the surface of thefoliage has to be exposed to the sun. On top of that, when youbend the foliage over, you are restricting the flow of nutrientsto the bulb. The veins in the leaves and the stem are a lot likeour blood vessels. If you restrict them the flow stops. ? Youdecide. I’ve presented my case. Bending them over seems to work,but I’ve spent a lot of money on my bulbs. I want them runningat full speed. What I do is clip the blooms off once they arespent, and just leave the tops alone until they are yellow andwilted. If they are still not wilted when it’s time to plant myannual flowers, I just plant the annuals in between the bulbs.As the bulbs die back the annuals tend to grow and conceal them.If one shows through I clip it off. It seems to work well for me.
